Fairfield Harbour Garden Club

June 2025

Spring is a wonderful time here in ENC to get out and dig in the dirt. The Fairfield Harbour Garden Club continues to share ideas to assist with successful gardening.

At the May 12 th meeting, Rick Reitzel shared information about sharpening and maintaining garden tools. His presentation included how to sharpen tools, the tools to use to sharpen your garden tools and how to clean your tools. Well maintained tools make gardening easier and reduce the spread of plant disease.

Also in May, members of the Garden Club participated in a day trip to Carolina Home and Gardens in Newport, NC. It was a beautiful day spent at a beautiful venue. After a presentation on Garden Essentials by the owner, Brian Wattson, the group toured the facility. Lunch was served in the Garden Room followed by shopping in the numerous green houses.

Each year the Garden Club awards a scholarship to a student from Craven or Pamlico County who is continuing their education in a field related to horticulture. This year’s winner is Storey Skinner. Storey will be graduating from Craven Early College East and attending ECU and studying Entomology (Bugs) in the fall. Storey will be recognized at the June Garden Club Meeting.

At the May Meeting the Nomination Committee presented the slate for officers for the 2025 – 2026 year. There were no nominations from the floor when asked, so members voted to accept the ballot as presented. The Board will be installed during the June meeting.

The 2025 - 2026 Board:

  •  President – Barbara Paulsen

  •  1 st  Vice President – Jan Reitzel

  •  2nd  Vice President – Robin Gale

  •  Secretary – Lori Walker

  •  Corresponding Secretary – Kathy Hallquist

  •  Treasurer – Eileen Wagner

  •  Assistant Treasure – Sharon Nash

6119 Cutlass, home of Jim and Martha McCormick, was voted “Yard of the Month” for May. Take a drive by and see the wonderfully landscaped gardens.

Thank you to the members that have been getting together to clean and paint the donated clay flowerpots. These decorated flowerpots will be sold, with and without plants, in the fall, as a fund raiser for the Annual Scholarship.

The next meeting of the Fairfield Harbour Garden Club will be June 9, at 9:30 in the Community Center.  Join us as we recognize our Scholarship Winner, recognize the Club Volunteers, and install the new Board of Directors. A continental breakfast with a “Year in Review” slide show will follow the general meeting. Dues for next year may be paid at this

meeting.

The Garden Club does not meet in July and August. Watch for information on the first meeting in Fall on September 8, 2025.
