April 5th General Fishing Club Meeting Newsletter

The meeting started at 7:00 pm.

The leadership gave General Board reports:

John McClain gave the treasury balance and reported on The Hope for The Warriors fishing trip. The trip is scheduled for May 18 on Captain Stacy's head boat. The boat departs from 416 Atlantic Beach Causeway, Atlantic Beach, NC. 28512, at 7:00 am. And it will return to the dock by 1:00 pm. Following the fishing trip, all will meet at The Shepard of the Sea Lutheran Church, Atlantic Beach, for a catered meal by Fat Fellas and to share fishing stories.

The address to the Lutheran Church is 201 E Fort Macon Rd., Atlantic Beach, NC 28512, approximately .6 of a mile from Captain Stacy's return launch. The trip cost for Fishing Club members is $50.00, which includes the fishing trip and meal. The purpose of the journey is to have a good time assisting the veterans. Please pay John McClain so he can firm up the number of members attending the event.

Jim Spatharos-at Fishermen Flea market

Fairfield Harbour Fisherman and Boaters flea market went well for the first time putting on this event. Next year we will do much more advertising for this event outside our community.

Jim Spatharos reported on the membership numbers. Some people want to stay in good standing but have not paid their dues. Total paid club membership is at 68.

Art Thinguldstad reported on his mentoring class. He has eight people signed up for the next course in mid-June, and he would like to get at least 15 participants.

Capt Lee Winkleman-Presenter

Our guest speaker for the night was Captain Lee Winkleman and his team, Captain Megan and Mark Nichols. Captain Lee has a 23-foot boat named Top Gun. Some club members and I have been out with Captain Lee, and he is the real deal. He will put you on fish. Lee spoke about many things, such as the type of fish soon moving into our local waters and how to fish them. Captain Lee also offers another fishing adventure on a 28-foot center console boat with twin 200 engines. He plans to go further into deeper waters to catch Triggerfish, Wahoo, Marlin, and Tuna.

Lee also spoke about conservation and what we can do as anglers to help preserve the fisheries. You might fish for what you want to keep and then target a different species. If you plan to release your catch, take care of how you handle the fish, and don't use a towel when holding them. Replace treble hooks with barbless single hooks. Captain Lee came bearing many gifts to raffle off, such as Tee shirts, a hat, cool can holders and a main prize of a free fishing trip awarded to one winner with the opportunity to take three others with him. That was incredibly generous of Captain Lee. The lucky winner of the fishing trip drawing was Eric Thinguldstad.

Eric Thinguldstad won the Fishing trip.

Boys and Girls Club Fun Day Fishing at the Harbour June 23.

Volunteers Needed for Fun Day at Fairfield Harbour:

The Fishing Club has partnered with several Clubs to provide a Fun Day at Fairfield Harbour with the Boys and Girls Club (B&G). We need your help.

The B&G Club pledges to provide a safe, educational, and enriching experience for kids of all ages. In the past, Fairfield Harbour Fishing Club has participated in a fun fishing day, and the kids truly enjoyed their time here.

This year we expanded the day to include other clubs and provide more experiences for the kids. The plan is to give them an educational and fun day at the Harbour that they will remember and inspire them to continue being upstanding citizens. Your help is greatly needed to make this a successful day.

The Fun Day date is June 23rd, 10-4:30 pm. Approximately 60 kids will participate. Set-up time(s) and location(s) of activities will be firmed up as we get closer to the date. We plan to provide activities such as; fishing, pickleball, corn hole, botchy ball, golf/putting, and provide lunch. Volunteers would assist with chaperoning events, set up activities, lunch, and oversee as needed. The B&G will provide transportation around the Harbour.

If you'd like more information on the Boys and Girls Club of the Coastal Plain, visit their website: www.bgccp.com.

Again, we need volunteers – contact Steve Mink at 760-885-7980 or Dave Phipps at 808-312-0560.
