Fairfield Harbour Fishing Club - Frying Fish and Teaching Kids to Fish

Updated: Jul 10, 2023

Fish Fry

This month we held an informal meeting / Fish Fry in place of our general meeting. We had 43 members attend, and all contributed to the meal by bringing a dish to pass. We watched a slide show of the Club’s recent events—my compliments to those that prepared the Tilapia fish, Doug Benz, and Mary Beth Croft. Don Yuska and Mary Beth cooked the fish to perfection. Compliments to Carol Yuska, Paula Mink, and Mary Beth for decorating the tables and to all the guys who helped set up the room and tables for the event and brought the drinks. I’m sure to have forgotten someone, so I’ll, upfront, apologize for that. This event was a grand success; we all hope to have a fish fry again.

Boy's and Girl's Club Event

We had an event with the Boy's and Girl's Club in May. Several Club members went to the JT Barber Elementary School to teach the kids how to cast a fishing pole. The event was held in the gym. We laid out hula hoops on the gymnasium floor of assorted sizes. The kids ranged in age from middle school to high school. They practiced casting with a fishing pole with a fishing lure and a weight with a white string on the end into a hula-hoop or a small plastic swimming pool—great fun, and what a spirited group of kids.

And sometimes, we had a line get caught up in the beams crossing the ceiling.

Thank you, Jim Spatharos, for working these down.

What a great time. Thanks to our volunteers, Jim, Don Yuska, Don Simpson, and Steve Mink.

Harbour Water Cleanup

Jim Spatharos headed up a Harbour Water Cleanup for our last event in June. We had several volunteers work on this.

Photos left to right: Harvey Pye and Steve Mink worked from the bulkheads to gather trash in the water. The Boy N Sea boat, sitting at the bow, is Don Simpson, the Captain's chair is Steve Burton, next is Mike Mchale, and Bill Zimmerman is at the stern.

The next meeting is Wednesday, August 2. We welcome new folks to join the Fishing Club.
