Talking Golf with Johnny Harrell

The Beacon MGA conversation is with new FH Resident, Harbour Pointe Golf Club Member, and Men's Golf Association Member Johnny Harrell for May. Johnny has made many new friends playing in MGA events at HPGC since his wife and best friend, Jamee, arrived in the Harbour in early January. Johnny is a lifelong North Carolina resident and a welcome addition to the Community, HPGC, and the MGA.

Beacon: Please tell us about your early experiences playing Golf in MGA events at Harbour Pointe.

JH: It's been great. Everyone has made us feel so welcome on and off the Golf course. It's a fantastic group of guys to play Golf with here. What stands out to me is that most everyone hangs around at the Pointe after Golf, waiting for results to be announced. Joe Pillow, Charlie Henke, and Tom Caruso do a fabulous job running these games for MGA.

Beacon: That's awesome; it is a fun bunch! Which hole is your favorite at Harbour Pointe?

JH: I like the entire Golf course; it is a course where you must use strategy and think your way around. My favorite hole is the Par three 6th, and my longtime friend, Bill Tazelaar, lives on that hole.

Beacon: You are correct. Several holes are tight off the Tee. Who introduced you to Golf, when, and where?

JH: I played maybe once or twice a year up until 2014. It was then I started playing at Statesville CC in Western, NC. My brother, Ike, introduced me to the game. He played High School Golf and helped me get started in the game. Ike is a good golfer and still plays to a 3 Handicap.

Beacon: That's great! It's a fun way to spend time with family. What other courses have you played?

JH: I've played some great places—Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, Bethpage Black, The Broadmore, Troon North, and Grayhawk.

Beacon: Wow! That's a list of legendary courses. When we talk about iconic courses that the public can play, it usually starts with places like PB and Spy. Who is in your dream foursome?

JH: Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Lee Trevino, and myself.

Beacon: All 3 are Hall of Famers and Ambassadors for the game. What other activities do you like besides Golf?

JH: I read a lot. I enjoy running and try to keep myself healthy. In May of 2022, I had a brain aneurysm and miraculously recovered.

Beacon: We are so happy that you made a miraculous recovery! Thanks for spending time with us today.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Fairfield Harbour and Harbour Pointe Golf Club, are better with new folks here like Johnny Harrell. It seems like Johnny has been playing in MGA events for years, and he has blended in very nicely.
