Quilting is Sew Hip

Updated: Oct 21, 2022

Don't miss it! The "Bee by the River!" Quilt Show Sponsored by the Twin Rivers Quilters Guild The New Bern Riverfront Convention Center October 21-22 Friday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Saturday: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Over 200 quilts, vendors, and exhibits are expected to participate.

Yep, these times are a changin’ and the old fashion quilting bee is buzzing with new life. Modern technology of computerized sewing machines has sped up the quilting process, but the traditional skills of this ageless art are steadfast. Creating patterns, selecting color combinations, and sewing the right stitch are the basics of this celebrated craft. The quilting process truly involves combining art and skill to make these glorious pieces of art that last for decades and become family heirlooms.

For Fairfield Harbour’s 25+ quilters, the quilting process is about sharing their knowledge, techniques, and stories. The group meets once a month for a “show and tell” and they talk quilts. Four times a year they reserve the community center and sew as a group all day.

Many of the members love making quilts so they can give them as gifts. Ann Petrie says, “All quilts have a story. And who I make it for is part of the story. I made one for my sister and selected the colors based on her guest bedroom.” Margaret Puotinen says, “I’ve given away about 175 quilts in the last 16 years.” Jenny Nebe adds, “We call these charity quilts – it’s rewarding to give them as presents.” Their talent and generosity abounds!

Want to see the quilts in person? Make plans to attend the "Bee by the RIver" Quilt Show on October 21 and 22 at the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center. Sandy Drechsler, a devoted quilter and member of the Fairfield Harbour Quilters, is President of the Twin Rivers Quilters Guild and LuAnne Tridico is the Show Registration Chair. The Twin Rivers Quilters Guild is 115 members strong. Many Fairfield quilters are displaying their quilts in the “Bee by the River!” Quilt Show.
