According to "Our World in Data," cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide. Many cancers can be treated successfully if detected early. Here in Eastern NC, we are fortunate to have the SECU Comprehensive Cancer Center in New Bern. Journey of Hope (JOH) Cancer Support Center, working under the umbrella of CarolinaEast Foundation, provides support locally to cancer patients, their families, and caregivers.
This year, to expand the Journey of Hope Golf Tournament, the Ladies Golf Associations at Harbour Pointe (HPLGA) and River Bend (RBWGA) are joining forces with the Emerald Ladies Golf Association to host this annual event. This is the 12th year The Emerald has successfully sponsored the JOH Tournament.
The JOH Tournament is scheduled for June 22, 2024. Two tournaments will be held that day: one at The Emerald Golf Course (EMGC) and one at The Harbour Pointe Golf Course, with River Bend and Harbour Pointe working together.
Jackie Hice and Cheryl Furman lead the JOH Tournament at Harbour Pointe Golf Club. The Emerald Golf Club wanted to expand the cancer fundraiser and asked Jackie and Cheryl if they would help. Jackie and Cheryl were delighted to jump in and support this worthy cause. Reba Aylward, a CarolinaEast Foundation volunteer and Emerald Golf Club member, is the Journey of Hope coordinator.
Jackie Hice said, "I am happy to be involved and instrumental in helping our HPLGA and Fairfield Harbour community participate in this worthwhile endeavor. We have all been touched by cancer. There is no better way of showing that we care and want to support those cancer patients, families, and caregivers in eastern North Carolina who need our assistance. Thank you for taking the time to consider joining us in this effort to relieve some of their concerns."
Cheryl Furman added, "The HPLGA is excited to offer our community an opportunity to help us make a difference in the lives of people living with New Bern cancer by supporting Journey of Hope."
