Craven Concerts presents Grammy-nominated pianist - Judy Carmichael

Wednesday, April 26, 2023, Doors 7 PM, Show 7:30 PM Orringer Auditorium, Craven Community College, 800 College Ct, New Bern, NC

Grammy-nominated pianist/singer/songwriter/radio host Judy Carmichael is one of the world's leading stride and swing piano interpreters. Count Basie nicknamed her "Stride" acknowledging the command with which she plays this technically and physically demanding jazz piano style. America's Jazz Times Magazine says: "Judy Carmichael exhibits a remarkable ability to channel Peggy Lee's breathy invitingness and befogged insouciance. She echoes the intense perspicacity of the solo albums of Annie Ross. In other words, Judy winningly blends two of the all-time finest, most intuitive jazz singers."

Judy Carmichael has played the major concert halls and festivals worldwide, from Carnegie Hall to the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice (the first concert ever presented by the museum). In addition, Ms. Carmichael has done comic skits, performed her music on radio and TV (CBS Sunday Morning, A Prairie Home Companion, Entertainment Tonight, and other shows), and performed private recitals for everyone from Rod Stewart, Cameron Macintosh, and Robert Redford to President Clinton and Gianni Agnelli.

2023 marks the 23rd anniversary of Judy Carmichael's Jazz Inspired, the popular weekly NPR show and Podcast. Ms. Carmichael talks with creative artists about their love for jazz and how it inspires them, from Billy Joel and Neil deGrasse Tyson to Robert Redford and Glenn Close. She has written two music books on stride piano arrangements and numerous articles about jazz. Her memoir, Swinger! A Jazz Girl's Adventures from Hollywood to Harlem was published in January 2018, and Great Inspirations, 22 Years of Jazz Inspired on NPR was published in August 2022.

Before each concert, tickets are available at Mitchell's, Fuller Music, Carolina Creations, and Bank of the Arts.
